Minceraft, A Publish Mortem

We have tried adding secrets and techniques to the game before. Small issues, like obscure crafting recipes or weird conduct, and all the pieces at all times will get discovered immediately. No matter how obscure we make a new function, it is totally documented within hours of a new release. This is superior, and an excellent example of how dedicated some Minecraft gamers are, but it additionally means we can't really disguise anything good in the sport even if we tried.


So a while in the past, I did some intentionally obscure code within the title display to change two letters around, making it say "Minceraft" (previous working gag, there's even a "minceraft" mockup t shirt design we did) instead of "Minecraft" on every 10000th recreation launch or so, and nobody discovered it! I used to be so happy about that, I lastly knew something about the sport the players did not know.


Flash ahead to this GDC just a few days in the past, I am doing an interview with Chris Hecker, and he asks me if there's something nobody has present in the game, and i say sure. I should've mentioned no, but I said yes. Then I start getting emails and tweets about it, folks start getting excited, and understanding how minor the secret is, I attempt to tell folks it's a really minor secret.  Server tracker That appears to fuel the flames. A reporter from a well-known gaming site needs to run an article on it, and that i inform him to not. Getting folks hyped up about an intentional typo isn't actually an excellent way to spend everyone's time.


There's plenty of cool stuff to be taught from this, though. One is that it Is feasible to cover stuff in plain sight, but as soon as folks go looking for it, they are going to find it. Another factor is that folks seem to want to get excited over issues, even in the event you inform them it's nothing major.


I'm impressed and relieved you discovered it. I won't comment on it outdoors of this subreddit.
